Basgo, once the capital of lower Ladakh, lies in ruins today, 60 km from Leh. It was once a seat of power of a branch of the Namgyal family and an important cultural and political centre and is frequently mentioned in the Ladakhi Chronicles. The monastery is situated on top of the hill towering over the ruins of the ancient town and it noted for its Buddha statue and murals. An early palace in Basgo was built in the 15th century.
