Exploring the vibrant community of Makoko, a floating shanty town on the Lagos Lagoon
Traveling on the highway from the airport into downtown Lagos, you can see brown wooden shacks in a cloud of smoke standing in the murky waters of the lagoon.
Makoko was founded in the late 19th century by immigrants. A third of the community are fishermen living on the water. Some people dig for building sand and process salt.
It's hard to know how many people live here. Estimates place it between 40,000 to 300,000 people. It's a community that grows and changes all the time.
